The Dachstein Mammuthhöhle (Mammoth Cave) takes its name from the scale of its passages, not from extinct animals. The system extends over 60 kilometers of explored tunnels and chambers, carved by groundwater through Dachstein limestone over millions of years. Guided tours run 75 minutes and show the largest dry sections with stalactite and stalagmite formations. The cave sits adjacent to the Giant Ice Cave (Rieseneishöhle) and is accessed from the same middle station of the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car from Obertraun.
