The Dachstein Krippenstein cable car rises from Obertraun on the shore of the Hallstättersee to 2,108 meters, giving access to the Five Fingers viewing platform, the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave, and the Mammoth Cave. The Five Fingers platform (opened 2011) extends five glass-floored projections over a sheer cliff above Hallstatt, one of which has a built-in slide. Below, the Hallstättersee connects to one of the oldest continuously mined sites in the world: Hallstatt’s salt mines have operated for roughly 7,000 years. The middle station gives access to both cave systems without requiring the full summit ascent. Plan a full day to take in all levels properly. Combination tickets for cable car and caves are available online. Obertraun is 8 km from Hallstatt by road.
