The Dachstein Rieseneishöhle (Giant Ice Cave) is a natural cave system inside the Dachstein massif where underground water froze over millennia into formations that fill entire chambers. The largest hall, known as the “Ice Chapel,” holds frozen waterfall columns several meters high. Guided tours last about 50 minutes. Temperature inside holds at around 0°C year-round, so bring a warm layer regardless of the season. Access is via the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car from Obertraun; the cave entrance is a short walk from the middle station. The cave was first opened to visitors in 1913 and remains one of the most impressive natural attractions in the Salzkammergut. The Mammoth Cave system (a separate dry cave) is at the same site and can be combined for a full underground day.
