Castelvecchio is a 14th-century Scaligeri fortress on the Adige River, housing Verona’s main art museum in an interior renovated by architect Carlo Scarpa in the 1950s-60s. Scarpa’s design is considered one of the finest museum interiors in Italy, inserting modern elements into exposed medieval masonry rather than concealing the building’s history. The original equestrian statue of Cangrande I from the Arche Scaligere is the centrepiece of the collection. Entry around EUR 7-10; open Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm. The Ponte Scaligero bridge attached to the castle is free to walk at any time. Ten minutes on foot from Piazza Bra.
