Buda Castle crowns Castle Hill above the Danube, housing the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum, including excavated medieval remains from the 15th-century Sigismund-era palace that preceded the current Baroque structure. The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt at least six times; the Communist government gutted the surviving interiors in the 1950s. Castle grounds are free; museum entry costs around EUR 10-15 per institution. Reach the hill by funicular from Clark Adam ter or bus 16/116 from Deak ter. Allow 2-3 hours for a thorough visit.
