The inverted-table silhouette of Bratislava Castle on its hill above the Danube is the city's defining image, and the views from the terrace across the river to the Austrian bank explain why it was built there: whoever controlled this hill controlled movement between Central Europe and the Hungarian plain.

Bratislava Castle crowns the hill above the Danube and the Old Town, housing the Slovak National Museum’s historical collection and offering views across the river into Austria. The current structure is largely a 20th-century reconstruction following an 1811 fire, though the hilltop has been fortified since the 9th century. Museum entry costs around EUR 7-10; open Tuesday-Sunday 9am-5pm. A 15-minute walk uphill from the Old Town. The terrace view at sunset is worth the climb even without entering the museum.
