The Bergkirche in Eisenstadt contains the mausoleum of Joseph Haydn, who spent nearly 30 years as court composer for the Esterhazy family at the palace next door. Haydn’s skull was stolen by phrenologists after his 1809 death and only reunited with his remains in 1954. Free or budget entry; open April-October. Eisenstadt is 50 km south of Vienna. Combine with the Schloss Esterhazy and the Haydn Haus for a full day on the Haydn trail.
