The Basilika Mondsee, on the Marktplatz in Mondsee village, is famous as the location where the Sound of Music wedding scene was filmed in 1965. The church is also worth seeing on its own terms: the Baroque interior dates from the 17th-18th century reconstruction of an earlier Gothic structure, and the monastery it belonged to was one of the oldest in the Salzkammergut, founded in 748. Free entry; open daily. Mondsee is 30 minutes from Salzburg by car or regional bus, making it an easy half-day excursion.

Basilika Mondsee
Most people arrive at the Basilika Mondsee because of The Sound of Music: the wedding scene in the 1965 film was shot in this church, and the Marktplatz in Mondsee village now has a small museum devoted to the film. The basilica is genuinely worth visiting for reasons that have nothing to do with Hollywood.
