Eisenstadt's Jewish quarter existed under Esterhazy protection for over three centuries: the Esterházy family, the great magnate dynasty of the Habsburg empire who employed Haydn and administered Burgenland, extended their personal protection to a Jewish community of the "Judengasse" starting in the 17th century, outside the jurisdiction of the town itself.

The Austrian Jewish Museum at Unterbergstrasse 6 in Eisenstadt documents the Jewish community of the “Judengasse” quarter, which existed under Esterházy family protection for over three centuries. The museum is in the Wertheimer House; the Wertheimer family were Habsburg court Jews and financiers. The hidden synagogue inside the building, designed to be invisible from the street, is the most intact historic synagogue in eastern Austria. Adults around EUR 7-9; open Tuesday to Sunday. Eisenstadt is 1 hour from Vienna by train. Combine with the Esterházy Palace and the Haydn Museum for a full day in Eisenstadt.
