The Attersee is Austria’s largest lake fully within the country, 170 meters deep, with water quality at drinking-water standard. Gustav Klimt spent summers here from 1900 to 1916 and the Klimt Themenweg trail connects the specific shoreline points where he painted; standing where Klimt stood is a specific art history experience. Boat services run May to October. Car is the most practical way to explore the lake; about 45 km from Salzburg. The north shore has the best public beaches. The Salzkammergut lake system also includes the Mondsee and Wolfgangsee nearby, making a multi-lake circuit possible in a day.
