The Arche Scaligere are 14th-century Gothic funerary monuments of the Scaligeri lords of Verona, rising from an iron-fenced enclosure beside the church of Santa Maria Antica. The largest monument honors Cangrande I, who ruled Verona at its medieval peak and famously gave shelter to Dante during the poet’s Florentine exile. The equestrian statues crowning the tombs are replicas; the originals are in Castelvecchio Museum. Exterior viewing is free at any time, and the complex sits 5 minutes on foot from Piazza delle Erbe.
