The amphitheater of Virunum sits on the Zollfeld plain south of Maria Saal, part of what was Noricum’s Roman provincial capital: a city of 15,000 to 20,000 people and one of the largest Roman urban centers north of the Alps. The site is accessible as an open-air ruin about 10 km north of Klagenfurt; car recommended. Free or small entry fee. Combine with the Magdalensberg archaeological complex 5 km away, which has an excellent museum covering the Noricum Roman period and Celtic-Roman transition in depth.
