Amphitheater Virunum

The amphitheater of Virunum was part of the Roman provincial capital of Noricum, a city that sat on the Zollfeld plain south of Maria Saal in Carinthia.

The amphitheater of Virunum sits on the Zollfeld plain south of Maria Saal, part of what was Noricum’s Roman provincial capital: a city of 15,000 to 20,000 people and one of the largest Roman urban centers north of the Alps. The site is accessible as an open-air ruin about 10 km north of Klagenfurt; car recommended. Free or small entry fee. Combine with the Magdalensberg archaeological complex 5 km away, which has an excellent museum covering the Noricum Roman period and Celtic-Roman transition in depth.
