Altstadt Zell am See

Zell am See's old town sits on a small peninsula between the lake and the train station, compact enough that the Stadtturm (town tower) and the lake promenade are about 200 meters apart. The town center has cafes, shops, and the 12th-century parish church; the lakefront promenade is the main reason to linger.

The lake promenade is the main reason to be here. Salzburg is about 1 hour by train on the Tauernbahn line; the station is adjacent to the old town. Free to walk. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier cable car at Kaprun, 8 km away, adds a glacier to the lake-and-mountain combination. Summer season for water sports, winter season for skiing; both are well developed.
