The Alte Burg in Gmuend in Carinthia is a 12th-century castle ruin integrated into the town square of one of Carinthia’s better-preserved medieval market towns. Free to view; about 75 km northwest of Klagenfurt in the upper Lieser valley. Car recommended. Combine with the Malta Hochalmstrasse above the town, one of Austria’s high alpine toll roads leading through glacial valley scenery to the Malta reservoir.
