Tennengau begins just south of Salzburg and follows the Salzach valley through Hallein before opening toward the Tennengebirge and Lammertal. The Celtic salt mines above Hallein are the district’s deepest historical thread, while gorges, caves, villages, and mountain approaches define its landscape.
Its closeness to Salzburg makes much of Tennengau practical as a day trip, but the district also works as the first step into the more alpine southern half of Salzburg State.
