Szentendre is a small town 20 km north of Budapest on the Danube Bend, and its Baroque main square was built by Serbian merchants who settled here after the Ottoman retreat in the early 18th century. The result is a distinctly Mediterranean-influenced streetscape in the middle of Hungary, now filled with galleries, craft shops, and good cafes. The Open-Air Ethnographic Museum (Skanzen) 2 km from the center displays reconstructed rural Hungarian architecture from across the country. Reach Szentendre by HEV suburban train from Budapest Batthyany ter in about 40 minutes. Half a day covers the old town; add a full day for Skanzen.
