Sankt Gilgen sits on the western shore of the Wolfgangsee on the Salzburg side of the lake. Mozart’s mother was born here in 1720 and his sister Nannerl lived here in later life. The Zwoelferhorn cable car rises to 1,521 meters for panoramic lake views. Bus connections from Salzburg take about 50 minutes on the Wolfgangsee Bus, and seasonal boat services connect the lake villages. The village is quieter and less commercially developed than St. Wolfgang across the water, making it the better overnight choice for travelers who want lake access without the day-tripper density.
