Schruns is the market town of the Montafon valley in Vorarlberg, where Hemingway spent three winters in the 1920s at the Hotel Taube, skiing and working on The Sun Also Rises. The Silvretta Montafon ski area is accessible from the town, and the Montafonerbahn narrow-gauge railway connects to Feldkirch (40 minutes) and the main Vorarlberg rail network. The Montafon Museum covers valley history and the Walser settlement heritage of the upper valley. Hotels are mid-range and oriented toward the ski season. In summer, the Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse scenic road and the hiking terrain above the valley make it a worthwhile destination. Plan 3-5 days in winter, 2-3 in summer.
