Radstadt is a walled medieval market town in the Pongau, one of the few Austrian settlements with a complete ring of fortifications still standing. Three round towers and the connecting curtain wall enclose the historic center, which received its market rights in 1289. The town sits at the foot of the Radstaedter Tauern pass and connects to the Ski Amade network in winter. Tauern railway trains from Salzburg take about 60 minutes. Hotels are traditional and mid-range, with a working-town character that distinguishes Radstadt from the pure resort villages nearby. The medieval walls can be explored on foot for free. For travelers passing through the Pongau, Radstadt is worth at least a stop and ideally a night.
