Pongau begins south of Tennengau and follows the upper Salzach through a broad network of alpine valleys. St. Johann is the administrative center, while the Gastein valley, Werfen, Bischofshofen, and the Ski amadé areas give the district several distinct travel centers rather than one dominant base.
