Obertauern sits on the ancient Tauern pass at 1,740 meters, a ski resort built on a Roman road crossing between Salzburg and Carinthia. The resort is designed as a complete ski circuit around the village, allowing ski-in/ski-out access from every hotel. Snow reliability is among the best in Austria, with a season typically running November to May. The Beatles filmed ski sequences for Help! here in 1965. Hotel infrastructure is strong and concentrated along the pass road, ranging from budget to four-star. Getting here by car takes about 90 minutes from Salzburg; bus connections run from Radstadt. The summer shoulder is quiet, but the pass road and surrounding Tauern hiking trails are accessible from June onward.
