Mörbisch am See is a whitewashed wine village on the western shore of Neusiedler See where the Hungarian border runs through the reeds less than a kilometer to the east. Its main claim to attention is the Seefestspiele, an operetta festival running every July and August on a floating stage set against the open lake and reed beds. The spectacle of full theatrical production on the water is genuinely good. Outside festival season the village is quiet, with architecture that reflects its Pannonian heritage: wide overhanging roofs, whitewashed walls, and corn cobs drying on wooden frames. Most visitors stay in Rust or Eisenstadt and come for the day or a festival evening. Festival tickets sell out early; book in advance.
