Mittersill is a Pinzgau market town at the northern entrance to the Felber Tauern, the road pass and tunnel connecting Salzburg state to East Tyrol through the heart of the Hohe Tauern mountains. The Nationalparkwelten visitor center here is a good first stop for travelers heading into the Hohe Tauern National Park, covering the park’s wildlife, glaciers, and ecology. The Krimml Waterfalls, Austria’s highest cascade, are 20 kilometers west along the Salzach valley. Reach Mittersill by the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn narrow-gauge railway from Zell am See in 30-40 minutes. Hotels serve hikers, cyclists on the Tauern cycle route, and winter visitors using the Hollersbach gondola for access to the Kitzbüheler Alpen ski area.
