Maria Alm is a pilgrimage village at the foot of the Hochkoenig massif, 40 minutes by bus from Zell am See, with a Gothic church spire visible for kilometers across the valley. The Hochkoenig ski area connects Maria Alm, Dienten, and Mühlbach into a three-valley circuit with 120 kilometers of runs and significantly thinner crowds than Saalbach or Zell am See. Hotels are traditional and family-run. In summer, the Hochkoenig Panoramaweg is a multi-day alpine walking route circling the massif at altitude. Maria Alm works as a quieter, more affordable alternative base for travelers who want access to good Salzburg skiing or hiking without the resort pricing of the better-known valleys.
