Lofer is a Saalachtal village about an hour south of the Salzburg-Bavaria border, best known for two things: the Almenwelt Lofer ski area and the Lamprechtshoehle cave, one of the world’s longest cave drainage networks at over 51 kilometers of mapped passages and accessible to ordinary visitors without specialist equipment. The Steinernes Meer limestone plateau rises behind the village, part of the same massif that extends into Berchtesgaden National Park across the German border. Hotels in Lofer are traditional and family-run, and the village works well as a one-night stop on a route between Salzburg city and Zell am See or the Tyrolean border. Summer hiking on the Steinernes Meer and a cave visit together make a full day.
