Slovenia’s capital is 2 hours by train from Villach, and it belongs naturally on any Carinthia itinerary. The old town is compact and entirely car-free, built around the Ljubljanica river and presided over by a castle on a forested hill above the central market. The architecture was reshaped by Joze Plecnik, a Slovenian who trained under Otto Wagner in Vienna and spent decades designing bridges, markets, and public spaces for his home city in a style that feels like Vienna’s Secession movement filtered through a very personal imagination. The triple bridges, the covered market colonnade, and the lamp post details are worth studying slowly. One overnight is enough to see the center; two nights allow a day trip to Lake Bled. No border formalities, euro currency, EU member. The evening riverside atmosphere is genuinely good.
