Lienz is the capital of East Tyrol, an administrative quirk: it belongs to Tyrol but is geographically cut off from Innsbruck by Salzburg state, which makes it feel more connected to the Dolomites to the south than to Austria's alpine heartland. The Isel river runs through a compact old town lined with pastel facades, and the Roman settlement of Aguntum sits a few kilometers to the east with preserved bathhouse foundations and exhibition hall. Sunshine hours here rival the warmest Austrian towns, and the peaks visible on a clear day are Italian. Lienz works well as a 2-night base for travelers following the Grossglockner road or exploring the Hohe Tauern National Park from the south. Hotels are good for a town this size, crowds are thin, and the combination of Roman history, Baroque architecture, and Dolomite proximity is genuinely unusual for a single small Austrian town.
