Feldkirch has the most intact medieval old town in Vorarlberg and most travelers miss it by stopping only at Bregenz. The arcaded Altstadt, the Schattenburg castle, and the walkable center make a 3-4 hour visit genuinely rewarding. The city sits at the gateway to Liechtenstein (15 minutes by car) and Switzerland, on the main Arlberg railway route. The Montforthaus, a 2016 concert hall, anchors the contemporary cultural program. About 30 minutes from Bregenz by train. One of western Austria’s most underrated overnight stops.

Feldkirch has one of the best-preserved medieval town centers in western Austria, a place where the Altstadt (old town) with its arcaded streets and the Schattenburg castle above it have survived largely intact. Most visitors to Vorarlberg go to Bregenz and miss Feldkirch entirely, which is a real navigational error.
