Deutschlandsberg is the gateway to western Styria's Schilcher wine country, producing a tart, dry blush wine from the Blauer Wildbacher grape that grows almost nowhere else in the world. Buschenschanken (farm wine taverns where producers sell wine direct from the property) in the surrounding hills are the primary reason for food and wine travelers to come. The medieval Burg Deutschlandsberg above the town has been modernized into an exhibition space. The Koralpe ridge behind the town opens hiking trails into quiet western Styrian mountain terrain. About 1 hour from Graz by car.
