Český Krumlov (historically Böhmisch Krumau) is a UNESCO-listed medieval Bohemian town with one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, positioned on a tight bend of the Vltava river in southern Bohemia. The castle contains one of the three best-preserved Baroque theaters in the world, with original 17th-century stage machinery still functional. From Salzburg, shuttle buses make it a long day trip in about 3 hours. From Vienna, it works better as an overnight stop between the capital and Prague. The town crowds significantly in summer; early mornings or a short overnight stay are the best strategies for avoiding the day-trip effect.
