Carinthia is Austria's lake country and its sunniest Bundesland (federal state). Protected by the Alps from northern weather systems, it gets more sunshine than anywhere else in Austria, and its lakes warm to swimming temperature from June through September: Wörthersee, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See, and Faaker See each have their own character and accommodation range. The Hohe Tauern National Park and the Grossglockner mountain at 3,798 meters anchor the northern region. Klagenfurt is the capital. The Carinthian cuisine reflects Slovenian and Italian influences from the southern borders. About 2 hours from Salzburg by car or train.
